Traffic woes on the incline in Jamshedpur

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, May 31: Jamshedpur is now grappling with a worsening traffic situation that has left commuters frustrated and the authorities concerned. The convergence of multiple factors, including a shortage of traffic police, an increase in rash driving, surge in vehicle purchases fanned by easy availability of bank and private finance, overloading of public transport and widespread non-compliance of road regulations, have pushed the city’s traffic system to the brink of collapse.

The shortage of traffic police personnel has emerged as a primary challenge in managing the increasing traffic mayhem. The town’s growing population and expanding road network have outpaced the traffic police manpower leading to a catch -22 situation. This scarcity has resulted in inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations, exacerbating the chaos on the streets. Traffic signals often malfunction or go unmonitored, further compounding the problem.

Rash driving has become a common sight in Jamshedpur, adding to the traffic woes. Reckless driving including speeding, disregarding traffic signals and overtaking from the wrong side not only endanger lives but also contribute to traffic congestion. The lack of strict penalties for traffic violations and a perceived lack of enforcement have emboldened many to flout rules with impunity. However, things are cautiously looking up as the district and police administrations have pulled up their socks and intensified checking and penalizing traffic offenders.

The rise in vehicle ownership has also played a significant role in aggravating the traffic situation. Jamshedpur has witnessed a surge in vehicle purchases, with an increasing number of individuals opting for private vehicles as their primary mode of transportation. The resultant increase in the number of vehicles on the road has strained the existing infrastructure and led to prolonged traffic snarls during peak hours.

Public transportation, intended to ease the traffic burden, has also fallen victim to the worsening situation. Auto-rickshaws and other public transportation mediums are frequently overloaded. Such unwarranted conditions not only slow down traffic but also pose safety risks to passengers.

Non-compliance with traffic rules and regulations is rampant in Jamshedpur. Many motorists, especially bikers, flout basic traffic rules such as lane discipline, parking regulations, and speed limits. This culture of non-compliance further hampers traffic flow and creates bottlenecks along major roads and intersections.

In the face of these challenges, it is crucial for the administration and other law enforcement agencies and citizens to join shoulders and take collective action to alleviate the traffic crisis in Jamshedpur. Without prompt and effective measures, the gridlock that plagues the town’s roads threatens to worsen, impeding daily life.  As the town races against time to restore order to its chaotic streets, it is hoped that the implementation of comprehensive strategies and a collective commitment to responsible driving will pave the way for a more organized and efficient traffic system in Jamshedpur.
