TMH organizes concluding day programme on World Heart Day

Jamshedpur, Sept. 29: The Department of Cardiology, Tata Main Hospital organised the concluding day session of the World Heart Day programmes at TMH Auditorium on Thursday. T V Narendran, MD, Tata Steel India and SEA, graced the occasion as the chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Narendran said, Creating awareness about heart diseases in the community is very important. It is a big responsibility that we have as a country to spend more on healthcare. As citizens we have a responsibility to take care of our own health.

As a corporate we have the responsibility to create awareness in the community and among our employees. Tata Steel focuses on health of its employees. We have a health index which helps us to maintain the healthy lifestyle of our employees

Earlier, addressing the gathering, Rajan Chaudhry, GM Medical Services, Tata Steel said, The very essence of World Heart Day is spreading awareness and the risk of cardiac disease. Cardiology is about two things, prevention and treatment.

The World Heart Day is all about constantly reminding the community about the prevention from cardiac disease. Its a pride for us that in this part of the country we have the best cardiac cath lab and infrastructure.

A brochure detailing the heart diseases and its symptoms was released by Narendran on this occasion. Dr Vijaya Bharat proposed a vote of thanks.

The Cardiology department launched a screening programme for the citizens of Jamshedpur earlier this month. The screening camps were organised between September 20-28 which conducted free check-ups at TMH, TMH clinics at Baridih, Sakchi, Sonari, South Park, Kadma and also in the urban community centers at Dhatkidih, Kagalnagar, Ramdas Bhatta, Bhalubasa, Namda Busti, Baridih and Bagbera.

More than 2000 people were a part of this initiative. They attended the camp to check their blood pressure, blood sugar and body weight (body mass index BMI).

About 63 per cent of the participants had a healthy BP reading, which was below 140/90 mm Hg. Around 67 per cent had healthy random blood sugar, below 140 mg per cent and 49 per cent had healthy BMI below 25. These ratings were found similar to the national data. The citizens with risk factors in the unhealthy range were counseled about healthy life style and periodic checkup.

World Heart Day is observed on September 29 each year. The theme for the current year is Power your heart. In order to curb the prevalence of heart attacks which strikes suddenly and affects even at ages below 40 years, the risk factors that make one susceptible need to be identified.

Public screening to unmask the silent risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes followed by individual efforts to modify them is necessary.
