Jamshedpur: The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has issued a weather alert across Jharkhand, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour at isolated locations. The alert is in effect for today and will remain in place on May 30 and May 31, as unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to persist across the region.
According to the latest meteorological observations, an upper air trough is currently extending from the east-central Arabian Sea to north Odisha. This system is passing through central Maharashtra, north Telangana, and south Chhattisgarh, lying between 1.5 km and 4.6 km above mean sea level. It is also tilting southward with height—a formation that typically enhances convective activity and increases the chances of thunderstorms and precipitation.
In a further development, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted the likelihood of a low-pressure area forming over the west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27. If the system develops as anticipated, it may intensify and influence the regional weather dynamics, leading to more widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and stronger wind activity over parts of eastern India, including Jharkhand.

“The current trough line and the upcoming low-pressure system may contribute to unstable weather, especially during the late afternoon and evening hours,” a Met department official stated. “People should remain alert and take necessary precautions, particularly in districts prone to lightning and wind-related incidents.”
In Jamshedpur and surrounding areas, weather remained cloudy through the day, with intermittent spells of rain witnessed in some localities. Authorities have advised residents to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms, secure loose objects, and stay tuned to official weather updates.
The district administrations have been put on alert, with local disaster management teams asked to be ready for any emergency response. Farmers, especially those involved in harvesting activities, have also been advised to take preventive measures to minimize crop losses.
