Three suicides in 24 hours shock Jamshedpur, RVS student ends life

Jamshedpur : In shocking cases of suicides three youths ended their lives in separate places in and around the Steel City during the past 24 hours.

Jagdish Kumar Singh (22) a student of RVS Engineering College, at a hostel in Bhilai Pahadi near his college was rushed to the Tata Main Hospital in a critical condition on Sunday night. But despite efforts, he succumbed to death today. He ate poison.

According to information, Jagdish was from Godda district and a student of third year engineering course and committed suicide due to a failed affair with a girl of the same college.

In another incident, 17-year-old Lokesh a resident of Kadma Main Road who was staying with his grand parents and aspiring for admission in engineering college took poison to end his life. The police have sent the body to the MGM Medical College for post-mortem after taking a statement from his father.

In yet another incident, 26-year-old Vikas Prasad hanged himself at his residence under RIT police station area in Adityapur last evening. The family members rushed him to the Tata Main Hospital emergency, where he was declared as brought dead.

Vikas, an employee an industrial unit in Adityapur, had an argument with his wife after which he shut himself in his room. Latter Vikas’s body was hanging from the ceiling fan. The police have sent the body to the medical college mortuary for post-mortem after recording a statement from Kishori Prasad, father of the deceased.

Officials of suicide prevention centre, Jeevan said though the average of teen suicide in the country is about 5.6 per cent only but the same in our city is alarming. �In our study we have found that depression and rising pressure to perform is the prime reason for the rising suicides. While studying we have found that people who are depressed have higher tendency to commit suicide. So there is an urgent need to understand the problem and address it�, he noted.

Apart from the rise in suicide cases, the city has also registered almost 60 per cent increase in cases of depression among teens resulting from exam phobia. NGOs, and psychologists say the trend is indeed alarming. Experts on adolescent psychology say that the situation can be controlled if parents can make sense of certain behavioral changes in their kids. They say timely help will prevent a child from taking extreme steps.

“Suicides are completely preventable if the behavioral signals are read and tackled in time. Parents need to be alert to changes in a child’s behaviour and offer swift help,� said a coordinator school�s program committee, Jeevan.
