Jamshedpur, Nov 26: A major accident occurred as the driver of a pickup van lost control of the vehicle that overturned near Thanthani on the Tata-Patamda road on Friday afternoon. Two of the labourers who were buried under the overturned pickup van died on the spot while another, identified as Sanjay Karmakar died during treatment at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur. Twenty four labourers sustained serious injuries and were sent to MGM Hospital for treatment. The labourers were coming from West Bengal’s Purulia and Bankura districts to Jamshedpur as they were scheduled to leave for Visakhapatnam from Tatanagar station in the evening for jobs.
According to reports, 32 persons were travelling in the pickup van. Most of them were from Sindri village.
Post the accident there was tremendous commotion near Thanthani with groans of pain and shrieks of fear that attracted local residents who rushed to the spot. The police was informed and with their arrival rescue operations commenced. The passengers of the ill-fated van were puled out and rushed to MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur where their treatment is in progress. Sources stated that the condition of many of them was critical.
MLA Mangal Kalindi who was on his way to attend a function at Patamda Degree College was informed of the accident and he immediately diverted to Thanthani, the spot of accident. He supervised the rescue work and announced a compensation of Rs One lakh each to the kin of those killed in the accident as per the Jharkhand government’s provisions.
The reports stated that most of the labourers who were coming to Jamshedpur were from Sindri and Khatra under Barabazaar policed station of Purulia district in West Bengal.
