Seraikela: Unidentified assailants opened fire at the residence of the executive electrical engineer Brijnandan Lal Barnwal in Kharsawan on Thursday. No one was however hurt in the incident.
Cops arrested three persons in this connection and seized a double barrel gun, two mobile phones with SIM card and a motorcycle used in the crime.
Police suspect the assailants had the motive to threaten the engineer in order to extort him. Those arrested were identified as Mukesh Kumar Sao, Pradip Kumar Mahanand and Vinay Kumar Tanti, all residents of Chakradharpur (West Singhbhum).
The SP of Seraikela-Kharsawan Indrajeet Mahatha said said they had registered a case against the three accused on the complaint of the executive engineer of the electricity department.
He said the accused persons had called the engineer and threatened him with dire consequences in case he refused to pay extortion money. The accused used an Airtel SIM to make the threatening calls, he said.
Acting on the complaint of the engineer, a district police team sprang to action and started investigation with the help of the technical cell.
Cops used the mobile phone numbers used to make calls by the accused to the complainant and traced the culprits. They said the engineer earlier used to work as a power grid operator.
The culprits tried to extort him but their bid was foiled by police.
