Tamil Nadu’s ‘Southern Taj Mahal’: A Son’s Tribute to Mother

Thiruvarur (IANS): A Chennai-based businessman has built a white-marble monument in memory of his late mother, earning it the title of the “Southern Taj Mahal.” Located in Ammayappan village near Thiruvarur, the memorial is currently drawing thousands of visitors from across India during the summer vacation season.

A Monument Built on Love

Amurdeen, 49, lost his mother, Jailani Beevi, in 2020. Inspired by the deep bond they shared and moved by how late DMK leader M. Karunanidhi honoured his own mother with a memorial in Kattur, Amurdeen decided to create a grand tribute.

“Just as the Taj Mahal was built out of love for a wife, I wanted to create a monument that expresses the love and affection I have for my mother,” Amurdeen shared.

Architectural Grandeur

The structure is a stunning recreation of Mughal-style architecture, crafted entirely from white marble specially transported from Rajasthan.

  • Scale: The monument spans approximately 8,000 square feet on a one-acre plot.
  • Design: It stands 46 feet wide and features towering minarets, mirroring the iconic silhouette of the original Taj Mahal in Agra.
  • Facilities: The complex is not merely a memorial; it includes a mosque and a madrasa where students can reside and study.

Inclusivity and Tourism

Since its inauguration in June 2022, the site has become a landmark for those unable to travel to Northern India. The management maintains an open-door policy, welcoming visitors of all castes and religions without discrimination.

To support the influx of families during the current heatwave, the site management is providing free buttermilk, sundal (savory chickpeas), and peanut candy to all guests. For many visitors, the “Southern Taj Mahal” offers a rare opportunity to experience marble architecture while standing as a reminder of the enduring power of a son’s love.
