‘The Kargil War Surgeon’s Testimony’ launched in Jamshedpur to honour Operation Vijay’s 26th anniversary

Book Offers Rare Insight into the Human Side of War from a Doctor’s Viewpoint

Jamshedpur, July 17: In a moving tribute to the heroes of Operation Vijay, a special book launch event was held at Hotel Sonnet, Bistupur, on Thursday evening. The event, organized by the hotel’s General Manager Swati Chakravarty, marked the release of The Kargil War Surgeon’s Testimony—a deeply personal and human account of the 1999 Kargil War, penned by Lt Col (Dr) Arup Ratan Basu YSM, a decorated war veteran and surgical gastroenterologist now residing in Sakchi, Jamshedpur.

The book does not dwell on military strategy or battlefield logistics. Instead, it captures the emotional spectrum of war—grief, resilience, camaraderie, and national pride—through the eyes of a doctor who treated wounded soldiers on the frontlines. Drawing on his first-hand experiences, Dr. Basu offers a poignant narrative of war’s human cost and enduring spirit. The book, published by Bloomsbury UK (India Office), is now available at Wasava Singh’s, Kamani Centre, Bistupur.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the city’s senior-most army official, Major General PP Subherwal, alongside prominent literary personalities like Purabi Ghosh. The book has received acclaim nationwide, with Dr. Shashi Tharoor, MP, praising it as “a powerful, poignant, and heart-wrenching indictment of the debilitating cost of war.”

The evening was both solemn and inspiring, serving as a fitting homage to the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces. The Kargil War Surgeon’s Testimony stands as an essential read that bridges patriotism with humanity, reminding readers of the silent strength behind every soldier—their doctor.
