Teachers should be the best minds in the country: Jiju Thomas

Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on September 5 in India as a dedicated occasion to honour teachers for their invaluable contributions to education and society. It marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a distinguished teacher, philosopher, and the second President of India, who believed that teachers were the nation’s best minds.

In Jamshedpur too, this day is observed with enthusiasm and gratitude. Students express their appreciation through a variety of activities—giving gifts and cards, organizing cultural programs, and recognizing teachers as mentors, guides, and architects of the future.

The celebration is a tribute to Dr. Radhakrishnan, who suggested that his birthday be observed as Teachers’ Day to honour the dedication of all teachers. On this day, students across the country show deep respect, love, and appreciation for their teachers’ hard work, sacrifices, and unwavering support.

With the advent of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, the role of teachers has become even more remarkable and widely recognized. While technology can make classrooms smarter and learning more engaging, teachers remain irreplaceable as mentors. They not only impart knowledge but also shape students’ character, instill discipline and perseverance, and encourage critical thinking.

The way Teachers’ Day is celebrated has also evolved over the years. Students now take a more active role in organizing cultural events, including dances, skits, and speeches, to entertain and thank their teachers. Earlier, gifts were mostly handmade cards, flowers, or thoughtful notes. Today, celebrations often include outings, parties, social gatherings, and even social media tributes. These modern gestures reflect changing times but continue to convey heartfelt gratitude.

The bond between teachers and students has also transformed. With greater independence on both sides, relationships today are built on respect, collaboration, and synergy. Many schools host special programs, assemblies, and competitions, where students showcase their talents as a token of appreciation for their teachers.

Teachers are often described as guiding lights who dispel ignorance and illuminate the path of knowledge and personal growth. They are the true architects of the future. By shaping young minds, teachers serve as torchbearers in the lives of their students, equipping them with the values and skills needed to become responsible citizens.

Beyond academics, teachers inspire students to reach their full potential, pursue their dreams, and adopt lifelong learning. Their impact extends far beyond the classroom, leaving an indelible mark on society.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s legacy lives on not just through Teachers’ Day but also through his profound words. His notable quotes include reflections on the paradoxical nature of humanity: “Man is a paradoxical being—the constant glory and scandal of this world.” He emphasized tolerance, the Infinite, and the true purpose of education. His philosophical insights revealed the interconnectedness of all things, highlighting wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual understanding.

As India celebrates Teachers’ Day each year, it is not merely a ritual but a reminder that while technology may change the way we learn, the heart of education will always remain human.
