Jamshedpur: The festive spirit of Holi has triggered a massive travel crisis at Tatanagar and Adityapur stations. Thousands of passengers are currently struggling to board trains heading toward Bihar and other states. Despite the addition of extra sleepers and general coaches, the demand far exceeds the available capacity.
Long-distance trains are witnessing “crush-load” conditions. Many passengers found it impossible to even enter the general compartments this Saturday. With reserved seats booked months in advance, the railway platforms have turned into scenes of chaotic struggle.
The Weekend Surge: A Perfect Storm
The travel rush peaked on Saturday due to a specific calendar alignment. Since March 1 falls on a Sunday and Monday is a holiday, most commuters chose this window to travel. Consequently, the pressure on major trains has reached an all-time high.
The following trains saw the highest footfall and overcrowding:
- Chhapra Express
- South Bihar Express
- Neelanchal Express
Railway officials noted that even with extra coaches, the “general” sections remain dangerously overcrowded. Many travelers were left stranded on the platforms, unable to push through the dense crowds.
Hope in Holi Special Trains
To manage this crisis, the South Eastern Railway has announced several Holi Special Trains. These services offer the last remaining hope for those without confirmed tickets.
Key Special Train Schedules:
- Tatanagar–Katihar Holi Special (08181): This train will depart every Monday starting March 2. It leaves Tatanagar at 1:00 PM and reaches Katihar the next morning.
- Tatanagar–Buxar Holi Special (08183): This service will run every Tuesday starting March 3. It departs at 5:10 PM, providing much-needed relief to Bihar-bound passengers.
Authorities are also monitoring high-pressure routes toward Delhi and Mumbai. The Station Superintendent confirmed that while “Tatkal” seats remain an option, they are exhausted within seconds of opening.
Railway Response and Safety
Railway officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure passenger safety. While overcrowding is severe, staff are being deployed to manage the flow of people.
“We are doing our best to accommodate the rush. We have added extra coaches and announced special trains to ensure residents can reach home for the festival.” — Tatanagar Railway Official
Passengers are advised to arrive at the station early and rely on official announcements for platform changes. The railways have also urged travelers to avoid standing on footboards or traveling on rooftops during this period of heavy congestion.
