Jamshedpur : Tatanagar railway station has introduced cashless transaction facility on Sunday. On the day one it recorded ticket bookings of about Rs 90,000, through use of debit and credit cards.
A PoS card swipe terminal has been installed at a counter of computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) building. Railway authorities said that soon all the seven counters of PRS will be equipped with swipe machines.
Passengers made cashless transactions with new facility.
Satyam Prakash, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur railway division said that one POS started functioning while the rest six in the other six counters meant for reserved tickets will start functioning from the next couple of days.
According to railway officials, apart from the seven reserved counters which are located on the first floor of Tatanagar railway station, the seven more counters meant for current tickets ( or unreserved tickets) located on the ground floor of the same building will provide the POS facility in another one week.
“Following call from the Union Government we have started introducing cashless transaction facility. Swipe card facility which will ensure cashless transaction will begin in another one week at the unreserved ticket counters. We have applied for POS machines and they are expected to arrive in one week,” said the senior railway official.
Passengers have also welcomed the move. “It has now become our habit use cards for any form of payment. We welcome the step taken by the railways. Numerous passengers will be benefitted. I purchased tickets using a debit card for my family amounting around Rs 5000 for a trip to New Delhi next month,” said Vimal Kumar, an employee of private bank.
Another good news is that as a part of ensuring cashless transaction, the Chakradharpur railway division would soon provide the facility of POS machines at the three railway city booking offices located at Bistupur, Sakchi and Telco.
Numerous passengers instead of going to the railway station for getting reserved tickets flock at the city booking offices. There are several passengers who rely on other city booking offices, the facilities will be introduced at city offices too.
Railway authorities informed that their first priority is to install swipe machines in PRS, unreserved ticket counters and city booking offices. In the next phase cashless transaction facility will be provided in booking parcels and freight booking points.
Satyam Prakash, who is also the spokesperson for Chakradharpur railway division said that the cashless transaction facility began from A-1 category Tatanagar railway station and that gradually the cashless transaction facility would be provided in other important stations under the division like Rourkela, Chakradharpur and Jharsuguda.
