Jamshedpur: In a decisive move to restore transparency, railway authorities have terminated the parking operator’s contract at Tatanagar Railway Station. The station—one of the region’s busiest hubs—will now see its parking operations managed directly by the Railways for an interim period of approximately two months.
Financial Default Triggers Termination
The crackdown follows the contractor’s repeated failure to meet financial obligations. Official sources reveal the operator struggled to fulfill a ₹7 crore commitment over a three-year period.
While the previous contract (held by Shell Engineering) was valued at approximately ₹4 crore, aggressive bidding pushed the current contract to nearly ₹7 crore. This steep hike reportedly created unsustainable financial pressure, leading to non-payment of the Railways’ revenue share despite multiple warnings.
Cleaning Up a Controversial Facility
The Tatanagar parking stand has long been a flashpoint for disputes, including:
-
Overcharging: Frequent passenger complaints regarding arbitrary fee collection.
-
Lack of Transparency: Poor management and manual slip systems.
-
Violence: Past rivalries over the contract escalated into a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a tempo driver.
To eliminate these irregularities, the Railways has assumed direct control. Authorities have deployed railway staff, introduced standardized parking slips, and increased supervision to prevent overcharging during this transition.
Stricter Norms for Future Bidders
Railway officials indicated that the upcoming tender will feature much more stringent eligibility criteria. To ensure accountability, the new contract is expected to mandate:
-
Digital Payment Systems: To track revenue in real-time.
-
CCTV Surveillance: For enhanced security and monitoring.
-
Strict Financial Vetting: Ensuring the winning bidder has the actual capacity to pay the bid amount.
