Tata Zoo’s lioness Zoya dies at 16 after prolonged illness

Jamshedpur: Zoya, a 16-year-old lioness and one of the most popular attractions at Tata Zoological Park in Bistupur, died after a prolonged illness, zoo authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The lioness, which had been brought to Jamshedpur from Africa in 2012, was suffering from a congenital medical condition that ultimately led to her death.

According to zoo officials, Zoya had been under observation and treatment for a considerable period. Despite continuous care, her health continued to deteriorate, and she passed away recently. Following a post-mortem examination, the zoo carried out her last rites in accordance with established protocols.

Confirming the development, Tata Zoological Park Director Naeem Akhtar said that Zoya’s death was caused by a congenital ailment and that she had been unwell for a long time. He described the lioness as one of the zoo’s most recognised animals and said her loss would be felt by staff and visitors alike.

Zoya was among five African lions brought to Tata Zoological Park in 2012, comprising two male lions and three female lionesses. The animals were transported to Jamshedpur under strict safety guidelines and were subsequently named after their arrival at the zoo. Two other lionesses from the same group had also died earlier.

Zoo authorities have informed both the Forest Department and the Central Zoo Authority about Zoya’s death, as required under existing regulations.

Tata Zoological Park, operated and maintained by Tata Steel, is one of the leading zoological facilities in eastern India. Though it is a non-governmental zoo, it functions under the guidelines and supervision of the Central Zoo Authority and follows prescribed standards for animal care and welfare.

The zoo is home to around 370 animals, including carnivores, herbivores, and a wide variety of bird species. Over the years, Zoya had become a favourite among visitors and was considered one of the prominent residents of the zoological park.
