Jamshedpur, Dec. 23: As mercury dipped in Jamshedpur, the Tata Zoological Park authorities have made adequate arrangements to ensure warm temperature and comfortable atmosphere for the animals in the zoo.
Officials at the zoo informed that mats and hay along with heaters have been installed to keep the animals fit and healthy in the winter.
Heaters have also been installed in the enclosures of animals like lions, tiger, leopards and sloth bear. The windows of their cages have been covered with jute mats, in order to shield them from the icy cold winds, said TSZP Director, Bipul Chakarborty. He informed that adequate care of the two pairs of the imported Zebras from Israel is being taken to ensure temperature is conducive to the animals in the zoo along with the remaining animals.
“As temperature dips in Jamshedpur, we take precautions every year, from October onwards. We take special care for the diet and also make other arrangements. All the animals, especially bears and hyenas, have heaters installed in their enclosures.
This is to provide them relief from the harsh winters. We have also put bulbs in bird cages to keep them warm,” said Director of the Tata Zoological Park, Jamshedpur, Bipul Chakraborty. He added that six room heaters have been installed inside the restricted area and shall cover some parts of the premises with tarpaulin sheets to ensure cold wave doesnt affect the animals.
Zoo has also planned to give multi vitamin capsules to the birds and animals if the mercury slips to below 10 degree Celsius.
Besides meat to the big animals like tiger, leopard and lion, ounces of vitamin supplements are provided for the carnivores. Herbivores have their share of green fodder, along with doses of minerals and vitamins.
Bulbs have also been provided in their confines, so that they remain warm at night.
The zoo hospital and kitchen have also geared up to help the inmates have a comfortable winter ahead.
Earlier, this month Tata Zoo imported two pairs of fine-looking zebras from Zoological Centre, Ramat Gan, Tel Aviv and has kept them under close observation under the watchful eyes of zoo veterinary doctor and animal keepers only to be available for viewing to the visitors in January.
