August 29 is National Sports Day

By Mukul Vinayak Choudhari

Tata Steel has always been committed to the development and promotion of sports, whether through community engagement or by striving for excellence at the national and international level. As a corporate, we have been leveraging sports to achieve wellness for our employees and the community at large. This integrated sports ecosystem nurtures athletes at every level, from grassroots programs to elite training facilities. We have developed world-class sports infrastructure operating 19 training academies across disciplines like Swimming, Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Handball, Athletics, Golf, etc.

Our five academies focus on grooming talented athletes for national and international achievements in sports such as Archery, Paralympics, Hockey, and Football. Notably, our academy cadets have been making us and our country proud over the years with achievements including Komolika Bari, Deepika Kumari, Jayant Talukdar, Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur in archery, Kalyan Chaubey and Subroto Paul in Football, Umesh Vikram in Para-badminton, and 13 mountaineers who have summited Mount Everest.

Tata Steel pioneered the launch of the Tata Football Academy (TFA), Tata Archery Academy, Naval Tata Hockey Academy, Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF), Sport Climbing Academy, Rowing Academy, and the Sports Science High–Performance Centre (HPC), providing comprehensive support to athletes.

Apart from the world-class sports infrastructure at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, Jamshedpur, we have further enhanced facilities across multiple locations, including a sports stadium at Kalinganagar, while also running Hockey, Archery, and Climbing academies in collaboration with the Government of Odisha. We host national and international events like the National Archery Championship, IFSC Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship 2024, Asian Chess Championship, SAFF Football Cup, Durand Cup, Para-Badminton Nationals, etc. promoting sports development and encouraging youth participation.

Our sports department has been working very closely with the local community in collaboration with Tata Steel Foundation. We have been effectively leveraging sports as a platform for empowering youth, instilling discipline with purpose, and creating opportunities.

Tata Steel also promotes inclusivity and diversity through sports. We support Special Olympics programs for athletes with special needs. The organisation has been actively supporting world-class para-badminton athletes like Umesh Vikram Kumar, currently ranked World Number Two in men’s doubles and World Number Three in men’s singles. Tata Steel also encourages and conducts sports for trans persons, an initiative ongoing for the last few years.

Though our effectiveness in sports can be measured by the number of medals our athletes win at the national and international levels, we prefer to gauge our success by increasing participation across sports. We believe everyone is a winner, thereby staying true to our ethos—sports is a way of life at Tata Steel.

We organise sports for women and children, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity. Taking one step further, to promote diversity across the organisation, we organise sports for trans persons, ensuring they have equal opportunities to participate and compete.

One challenge is encouraging children to participate in sports, as they are often engaged with gadgets instead. To overcome this, we organise summer camps that introduce children to various sporting and wellness disciplines. These camps emphasise inclusion, hosting special children and those from underserved communities. By providing a platform for children to discover their potential, we encourage them to adopt sports as a way of life.

At Tata Steel, sports is not just an activity— it is a way of life. We believe sports play a vital role in balancing mental and physical health. Our vision is to continue nurturing talent from grassroots through structured pathways, starting from community camps to elite academies.

We will expand our outreach to tribal, rural, and underserved communities, unearthing and developing raw talent through sustained mentoring, world-class coaching, and exposure to national and international platforms.

Employee engagement through sports—by organising events like ID, JDC, Inter-Company, and Steel Plant Sports Board (SPSB) events—will continue to be an integral part of our company culture.

Tata Steel partners with National and Regional sports bodies to support and develop talent across multiple disciplines. To promote the sporting culture holistically we have associated with various National and Regional Sports Federations and Associations across various sporting disciplines.

Message on National Sports Day:
Let sports be a part of your life, regardless of age or gender.
Play any sport you enjoy—because playing is like a mini-vacation.
It beats stress, reboots you physically and mentally, and inspires you to do better each time.
It’s a fun and rewarding way to take care of yourself.
Be a sport. Keep playing.
