Tata Steel’s EMPACT focusses on sustainable environmental practices

Jamshedpur, Jan 29: Tata Steel commenced the sixth edition of EMPACT (Environment Management for Proactive Action), the annual Environment Meet at Beldih Club today. A three-day long event (January 29-31, 2020) is an opportunity for environmental experts, scientists and organisations to discuss critical environmental issues on climate change, carbon footprint, industrial emissions, compliances, etc.

This year, the theme of the EMPACT meet is �Beyond Compliance�. This platform seeks to build on the existing knowledge through interaction with thought leaders, scientists and industry experts from diverse fields of society. It also provides an opportunity to explore the issues, innovations and engineering strategies towards environmental sustainability. The wealth of knowledge and information exchanged in this meet is of tremendous benefit to all the stakeholders in challenging the status quo in industrial environment management.

Addressing the participants as Chief Guest, Sanjiv Paul, Vice President (Safety, Health & Sustainability), Tata Steel acknowledged the importance of having such platforms to benefit all stakeholders, as steel industry faces more challenges with respect to the environmental issues.  

Tata Steel�s senior leadership including Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President (Corporate Services), D B Sundara Raman, Vice President (Raw Materials) and R Rabi Prasad, President Tata Workers� Union among other senior officials were present during the inaugural programme.

They launched the Process Environment Management System, which consists of interrelated approaches to managing environmental hazards associated with the steel industry having a potential to be implemented across other process industries. The system upon its implementation is intended to reduce the frequency and severity of environmental incidents resulting from releases of chemicals, dust or other energy sources.

The meet witnessed a congregation of experts from various prestigious institutions like IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, World Resources Institute, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and various subsidiaries of Tata Steel and related companies who shared information and knowledge on the common challenges faced by the steel and mining sector.

Today�s technical presentations by the experts included topics like Water Resource Management for Sustainable Development: Issues, Challenges and Strategies, Air Quality Management in India: Challenges & Opportunities, Hyper Mapping air pollution using low cost sensors, Innovative economic models for industries to address Climate Change, Remote Sensing & GIS-usages in Air Pollution Mitigation, among others. 

The next two days of the meet will witness threadbare discussion on topics like Environmental Regulations Scenario Outlook, Steel Recycling Business, Carbon Neutrality Roadmap for Iron & Steel Industry, R & D initiatives for Environment Sustainability, Environmental Initiatives of various companies, Advanced Pollution Control Technology: Hybrid APCE, Environmental Solutions by Automation, Emerging Trends and Cases in Biodiversity Management, Sustainable Mining, Monitoring of Air Emissions, Online Analysers: Opportunities & Challenges, etc.
