Tata Steel’s civic role questioned by Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar

Ranchi / Jamshedpur: Potka MLA Sanjib Sardar on Monday raised a key public issue in the Zero Hour of the Jharkhand Assembly, urging the state government to ensure that Tata Steel delivers essential civic amenities to nearly 20 panchayats falling within its operational periphery.

Sardar said that despite being located just 3 to 5 Km from Tata Steel’s command area, panchayats such as Bagbera, Kitadih, Ghaghidih, Karandih, Purihasa, Keruwadungri, and Byangbil continue to remain deprived of basic necessities like drinking water, electricity, and sanitation. These areas represent over one lakh residents who are directly affected by the lack of civic amenities.

The MLA underlined that a large number of permanent, temporary, and contractual workers of the Tata Group reside in these panchayats, yet they remain neglected in terms of civic development.

“It is unjust that those who contribute their sweat and labour to the company are still deprived of fundamental services while living within its periphery,” Sardar said, adding that the steel major “must provide permanent services — including clean drinking water, sanitation, power supply and other civic amenities — through its CSR initiatives.”

Through the Assembly, Sardar urged the state government to direct Tata Steel to take responsibility for providing these essential services in all affected panchayats so that the living standards of nearly one lakh families in the Potka region can be strengthened.
