Jamshedpur, March 16: The request to start Air India flight services from Jamshedpur made by Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has got a response from Tata Steel vice president (Corporate Services) Chanakya Chaudhary.
In a letter to the SCCI president Vijay Anand Moonka, Chaudhary said, “Since the airport at Jamshedpur is constrained by its size with limited runway length, there is a need to have a separate airport which can handle commercial aircraft, operated by the airlines. Towards this, the Union Government and State Government have jointly embarked on the Dhalbhumgarh Greenfield airport project, which is expected to further the cause of regional connectivity. We are hopeful that many airlines would start operations once this airport is made operational. We would in any case share your request with Air India for them to consider the feasibility of starting operations in Jamshedpur in case they have smaller aircrafts.”
Moonka had written to Tata Steel CEO and MD TV Narendran on 5th January last, requesting for Air India flights from the city to provide better air connectivity to city businessmen and people in general.
In the letter, Chaudhary also said, “You may recall that during the centenary celebrations of Tata Steel in 2007, we had obtained the approval from Government of India for operation of commercial flights from Jamshedpur airport. Some airlines like Deccan Airways, Kingfisher airlines etc had started operations but stopped due to techno economic feasibility and operations not being sustainable.”
The letter further read, “You may also be aware that when the Union Government unveiled the UDAAN (Ude Desh ka AAM Nagrik) scheme in 2016 to boost regional connectivity, Jamshedpur was indeed one of the airports that were bid out to an operator in the first phase of the scheme However, the bidder who won this route, Deccan Charters, has not commenced operations till date.”
Hearing this since childhood but not sure when would Jamshedpur be having it’s own airport. Very sad to hear that being one of best cities in India but still does not have a airport.
Yaa it’s TRUE,it’s all depend on our govt to do it or support.
There are many airstrips with smaller length like AIZAWL. Slight elongation of strip is possible.ATR CAN ALWAYS BE STARTED
Air connectivity is very important for our awesome city Jamshedpur. It will help the general people to travel faster if connecting to the metro city airports as well as more business to come in. But it can only be done if our govt. take this on priority.
If TATAs, follow it up seriously, it’s not impossible. Kingfisher, Air Deccan did have flights to JSR (Sonari), at one point if time. Jamshedpur is in dire need of air connectivity.
Tata seriously doesn’t want an airport here. Other small places now have airports but we don’t. I seriously don’t know why? What’s the reason? Tata’s now have airindia and vistara but the birthplace of Tata doesn’t have an airport. Isn’t that funny? So much pain and trouble can be avoided for common people if they seriously dedicate their efforts on making an airport here rather than a new road to the zoo. Ask the common public here for their opinion. Let’s see what they have to say. Planned city? Apparently not.
3 things in life are certain:
1. Taxes
2. Death
3. Jamshedpur ever getting an airport for it’s people.
The owner of Vistara and now Air India but no airport in their own hometown. Isn’t that funny? (Tata and the Govt) Keep the blame game on!!! Alas! It is the common man who always suffers.
