Jamshedpur: In a major move to bolster industrial safety, Tata Steel is considering a total ban on the entry of two-wheeled vehicles within its plant premises. This possibility was discussed extensively during an Apex Safety Council meeting held on Friday, chaired by Tata Steel CEO and MD, T.V. Narendran.
The management expressed deep concern over the movement of vehicles within the Jamshedpur plant. While the plant has undergone significant “de-congestion” efforts, the high volume of employees commuting via two-wheelers is still viewed as a major safety risk. Narendran emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward safety lapses, stating, “Playing with lives will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
The meeting also reviewed fatal accidents that occurred during the previous financial year. The MD has instructed the council to explore alternatives—such as fixed timings for vehicle movement or a complete restriction on two-wheelers—to prevent future accidents.
The meeting was attended by top management, including Chief Safety Neeraj Kumar Sinha, and Tata Workers’ Union President, Sanjeev Choudhary (who joined online), along with other union representatives.
