Jamshedpur: Tata Steel today organised the third edition of the ”Suppliers Sustainability Expo” at Steelenium Hall wherein more than hundred suppliers were invited to showcase their sustainability initiatives and cross-learn from each other. Anand Sen President, TQM &Steel Business, Tata Steel graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by other senior executives of Tata Steel and some select group of suppliers.
Shubhenjit Chaudhuri, Managing Director, Tata Pigments and Raghuram Tata Associate Professor – Strategic Management Area, XLRI Jamshedpur were the special guests for the day and assessed the shortlisted suppliers for selecting the overall champion.
Sanjiv Paul, Vice President, Safety, Health and Sustainability, Tata Steel shared his views on Climate Change risks to business, how sustainability in supply chains is becoming more and more important and how suppliers and customers need to collaborate to reduce Plastic Pollution.
Sen shared his thoughts on how more and more Tata Steel supplier partners should be a part of the sustainability journey. He also spoke about the acute water scarcity in the Jamshedpur area and in India and how it has an economic impact on the business front.
Similarly, waste management (plastic is the tip of the iceberg) and GHG emissions are a serious concern for any business. Human beings need to take serious steps to curb climate change and waste management issues and how supply chains may get disrupted due to these issues calling for greater collaboration with supply chain partners for addressing these issues.
Tata Steel had invited case studies from supplier partners in two categories (Established Practitioners and Emerging Practitioners) based on revenue across the upstream and downstream value chain. The case studies were in the sustainability aspects of – Safety, Environment Excellence and Social Excellence for the Established & Leading Practitioners and Sustainability Excellence (including Environment, Safety and Social Excellence) for the Emerging Practitioners.
The assessment was done by a panel of assessors comprising of senior officers from Tata Steel through desk assessment followed by face-to-face presentations on 4th July, 2018. The top two suppliers in Established Practitioners category (all three aspects) were awarded by Sanjiv Paul. The top two suppliers in Emerging Practitioners category and overall Sustainability Champions were awarded by Anand Sen
