Tata Steel opens P N Bose Geological Centre in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, March 2: Tata Steel today dedicated a Geological Centre named after pioneering geologist P N Bose, on the eve of 185th Birth Anniversary of it’s founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata.

The Centre, one of its kind, was inaugurated by T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Steel.

This Centre has been set up as a specialised geological hub, recognizing the immense importance of preserving and exhibiting the geological riches of the nation, particularly in Odisha and Jharkhand.

The Centre offers a unique opportunity to explore the intricate layers of our planet’s history, serving as a platform for understanding the formation of rocks, minerals, fossils, and the dynamic processes that have shaped Earth over millions of years.

It also serves as a platform to document the history of mining at Tata Steel and honour the contributions of numerous renowned geologists, mining experts, and process engineers.

While Tata Steel is primarily known as a steel manufacturing company, it is worth noting that it is also one of the largest mining companies in the country.

The Centre highlights the presence of ores and minerals, with a focus on minerals essential for steel production, the geology of the Singhbhum-Odisha region, a tribute to P N Bose’s life and work, and dedicated exhibits on Tata Steel’s iron ore, manganese, coal, and chromite mines.

The Centre was conceptualised by Dr T Mukherjee, Former Deputy Managing Director (Steel), Tata Steel, who graciously donated mineral samples from his personal collection to the Centre.

Moreover, the collection at the Centre has been enhanced with rocks and mineral samples generously provided by the family of the legendary Late Dr J J Irani, Former Managing Director, Tata Steel.

Centre to educate young geologists: Chanakya Chaudhary

 To open soon for public

Jamshedpur, March 2: Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President, Corporate Services, Tata Steel, said, centre offers comprehensive information on geology, with a particular focus on iron ore, coal, pyroxenite, and related subjects. Visitors to the center can delve into the history of excavation, geography, and gain insights into the significance of mining processes. The facility also houses a curated collection of stones associated with the company will be showcased at the centre.

Chaudhary highlighted the center’s role in educating young geologists about the integral contributions of mining, spanning from stone quarrying to the establishment of steel plants. The center, designed in the shape of a mine, is a merger of two quarters and will soon open for the general public.

Notably, the park surrounding the entrance features installed stones, including those of iron ore and limestone crucial in steel manufacturing. The center provides a comprehensive narrative, covering the historical aspects of coal mining through to contemporary research.
