Sustainability initiative to reduce carbon footprint
Jamshedpur:Â Tata Steel Mining Limited (TSML) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to secure a long-term supply of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) for its Ferro Alloys Plant located in Jajpur, Odisha. The agreement was signed in the presence of key officials of both companies and Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary of the Industries Department of the Government of Odisha.
Under the MoU, BPCL, a leading public sector oil and gas company in India, will provide the agreed amount of natural gas through its pipeline to TSML’s Ferro Alloys plant in Jajpur. This partnership is a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of the plant since it will allow for the production of ferro alloys using cleaner fuel LNG instead of furnace oil, which will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Pankaj Satija, Managing Director of Tata Steel Mining, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating that it is consistent with the company’s commitment to decarbonization and sustainability. He believes that the relationship between the two companies will have a positive impact on the environment, in addition to helping them reduce their carbon footprint.
Rouf M Khan, Head of Gas (East) at BPCL, also expressed his happiness at being associated with Tata Steel Mining and supplying them with natural gas for their operations. He believes that this partnership will help both companies inch closer to their goal of decarbonization.
This agreement marks a significant milestone in Tata Steel Mining’s journey towards achieving its sustainability goals and strengthens the company’s efforts towards a greener future. The company has been actively exploring and adopting various initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and protect the environment. It is noteworthy that TSML had recently signed a similar agreement with GAIL (India) Limited for the supply of natural gas to its Ferro Alloys Plant in Athgarh, Cuttack, to replace furnace oil with cleaner fuel.
