Jamshedpur: Around 15 shops were demolished during an anti-encroachment drive conducted jointly by Tata Steel and the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) in the Manifit area of Telco on Friday.
According to officials, the shops had been built nearly 50 years ago and the matter had been pending in court. The court recently ruled in favor of Tata Steel, after which notices were served to all the shopkeepers asking them to vacate the premises.
Despite receiving the notices, the shopkeepers did not vacate their shops. Following this, the district administration along with the Tata Steel team carried out the demolition drive.
Shopkeepers protested and requested more time, but the authorities proceeded with the action in compliance with the court order. Sources said Tata Steel had approached the court as part of efforts to improve the city’s beautification and streamline traffic movement in the area.
