Tata Steel inaugurates JN Tata Park at Pundi

Jamshedpur, Aug 4: Promoting biodiversity, smart mining and sustainability in its areas of operation, Tata Steel’s West Bokaro Division inaugurated J N Tata Park at Pundi today. The park was jointly inaugurated by D B Sundara Ramam, Vice President (Raw Materials), Tata Steel and Atrayee Sarkar, Vice President (Human Resource Management), Tata Steel in the presence of Manish Mishra, General Manager, West Bokaro Division, Tata Steel and Siddhartha Shah, Chief Human Resource Business Partner and Chief Diversity Officer, Tata Steel.

The one-of-a-kind park is built over an area of 60-acres, the newly build park has an open amphitheater, 4 unique view points and 5 Gazibo with Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) benches. The park has been built on overburden slopes and has been developed over the period of time using ancient Miyawaki method of forest plantation. A total of 50 acres dump slope was developed through seed ball plantation using native forestry species. A maze garden along with a vertical garden also adds to the beauty of the park. The wood plastic composite (WPC) has been used as deck panel inside all viewpoints which is made from friendly recycled material and is a good substitute to wood. Techniques like seedball plantation on overburden, coconut shell sapling plantation, niche nesting and bird feeds made from household waste have been implemented in the park to enrich the biodiversity quotient further.

To mitigate the impact on biodiversity, Tata Steel in consultation with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) had developed a Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for West Bokaro Collieries. BMP is intended to provide practical guidance for the progressive restoration and enhancement of biodiversity within the mine.
