Tata Steel inaugurates ISWP Pond in Jamshedpur, plants 1,000 saplings on World Environment Day

Painting, elocution contest organized for school students

Jamshedpur, June 5: Tata Steel today celebrated World Environment Day by organising various activities which included plantation drive at different locations and rejuvenation of a water body in ISWP area reiterating its commitment for a sustainable future.

While plantation drive were organised at various places including CRM Bara, Jamshedpur Works, near nursing hostel at Tata Main Hospital, Neem Bagh, a function was organised in the evening at Beldih Club to mark the important occasion.

Over 1000 saplings were planted by dignitaries in various areas of Jamshedpur, while rejuvenation of water body in ISWP area spread over 0.5 acre has created a water holding capacity of two million litres. Additional 0.25 acres is being developed as recreational space with grass area and tree saplings. The efforts are part of Tata Steel’s sustainability journey adding more land under green cover and creating more water holding capacity through rejuvenation of water bodies, which were earlier lying ignored.

Besides, painting and elocution contest for school students on themes around environment, Online Webinars, Online quizzes, emoji Pictionary, riddles and word puzzles for Tata Steel employees were also hosted on intranet.

The theme for World Environment Day for 2024 is ‘land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience’. Land restoration is critical for protection and revival of ecosystems and 2021-2030 is considered as the UN decade on ecosystem restoration. Aligning with this theme Tata Steel celebrated World Environment Day yesterday (5 June 2024), across its sites including mines, plants, marketing & sales office locations. It involved multiple stakeholders with online as well as on ground activities.

To commemorate the day and culminate the activities carried out to raise awareness, Environment Day function was organized at Beldih club, Jamshedpur. The winners from all the competitions were awarded in presence of Chief Guest Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President Corporate Services, Tata Steel, Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union and keynote speakers Anand Malligavad, Lake Conservationist and Professor N.H. Ravindranath, a retired professor from Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

In the run up to the WED, the company also organised, Greenathon, an environmental awareness marathon for the public, at JRD Tata Sports complex early this month. Besides, a Nature Trail was inaugurated at Sidhgora area of Jamshedpur.

Like every year, Tata Steel has declared Environmental Excellence Green Awards FY24 for best performing departments in aspects of environmental KPIs, across all locations of India.
