Tata Steel executive dies in road mishap at Northern town, three others injured

Jamshedpur : A 56-year-old Tata Steel executive, Sanjay Kumar Verma, was killed after being hit by scooter near his house at Northern town in Bistupur late last night.

Verma, who was head of Environment Project at the company, had sustained grievous head injuries and was rushed to Tata Main Hospital where he died at 6.20 am today.

The mishap took place at around 10 pm when the victim, who was a resident of Bungalow No 13 in Northern Town was taking a stroll after taking dinner close to the Keenan Stadium.

According to information, three scooter-borne youth who were riding at high speed from Sakchi end hit Verma, causing him to collapse on the road facing the head.

The three youths, all belonging to their early twenties and residents of Jugsalai locality of the city, also fell down and got injured. Passers by rescued Verma and also the three youths and rushed them all to the Tata Main Hospital.

A senior official of Tata Main Hospital said that Verma had been brought to the hospital with grievous head injuries.
The body has been kept in the TMH mortuary and it would be taken for the post-mortem and the subsequent cremation after his son Ankit Verma returns from USA where he works as a software engineer.

“He was badly injured in road mishap as he was bleeding profusely. We did all the necessary test, including the CT Scan in that condition. But his bleeding did not stop, causing his blood pressure plunge drastically. Finally, he died at about 6.20 am,” he said.

Verma is survived by his widow Aruna, son Ankit and daughter who is doing her Plus-Two beside teaching in a Kindergarten school in Bistupur.

Relatives, friends as well as the colleagues of Verma had visited the Tata Main Hospital and his residence on getting the news of his death this morning.

Meanwhile, the three who caused the mishap have been identified as Naim Sheikh, Nasim Ansari and Mohammed Asif, all residents of Millat Nagar in Jugsalai. They have also sustained head injuries due to the fall after hitting at the Tata Steel executive.

Officer-in-charge, Bistupur police station, Anuj Kumar confirmed that the three youths who caused the mishap are undergoing treatment at the Tata Main Hospital.

“We are investigating the mishap. The youths are recovering from the injury, we will take statement from the trio and find out who among them was riding the scooter,� he noted.
