Tata Steel Celebrates India’s 78th Independence Day, Highlights Commitment to Sustainability and National Growth

Jamshedpur, Tata Steel marked India’s 78th Independence Day with spirited celebrations at its Jamshedpur Works. The event commenced with the hoisting of the national flag by Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services, who addressed the gathering on the theme of unity in diversity. Chaudhary emphasized the importance of respecting and honoring India’s diverse cultures, religions, and languages, underscoring the nation’s collective progress towards a shared goal.

In his address, Chaudhary highlighted India’s entry into the ‘Amrit Kaal,’ a significant period aimed at making the country an inclusive and developed nation by 2047. He pledged Tata Steel’s continued support in this national endeavor, citing the company’s extensive contributions across various sectors, including industry, infrastructure, education, sports, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods.

Reaffirming Tata Steel’s commitment to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat,’ Chaudhary noted the company’s century-long dedication to self-reliance. He commended the government’s next-generation reforms designed to enhance the ease of doing business in India, particularly the increased capital expenditure aimed at boosting infrastructure development.

Chaudhary also addressed challenges in the global steel market, including the impact of subdued economic activity and tight monetary policy. He pointed out that while global steel prices softened, domestic prices remained relatively stable. He reiterated Tata Steel’s commitment to expanding its capacity in India, with significant progress towards achieving a 40 MTPA capacity. The ongoing Kalinganagar Phase II expansion and the upcoming commissioning of a low-carbon electric arc furnace plant in Ludhiana were highlighted as key milestones. “The Kalinganagar Phase II expansion is currently underway, with the second blast furnace at Kalinganagar set to be commissioned soon, increasing the overall production capacity of hot metal to 8 MTPA at Tata Steel Kalinganagar. This expansion will also broaden the company’s flat products portfolio,” Chaudhary added.

Reflecting on Tata Steel’s rich legacy in Jamshedpur, Chaudhary emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering growth in the city, in line with the visionary ideals of its founder. He also mentioned ongoing trials for hydrogen gas injection in one of Jamshedpur’s blast furnaces as part of the company’s focus on process improvement, direct carbon avoidance, and carbon capture.

Digital transformation and sustainability were key themes in Chaudhary’s address. He noted Tata Steel’s investments in cloud, data, and AI technologies, which have significantly improved efficiency and transformed operations. He also emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental sustainability, highlighting efforts in afforestation, land restoration, and water conservation, as well as the establishment of a carbon bank to support decarbonization efforts.

The Independence Day celebrations also featured the unveiling of the “Billion Impressions” sculpture, symbolizing Tata Steel’s commitment to shaping India’s future. Chaudhary concluded by reflecting on Tata Steel’s deep-rooted commitment to the development of Eastern India, particularly in Jharkhand and Odisha, reaffirming the company’s role as a key partner in India’s journey towards a brighter tomorrow.
