Tata Motors Jamshedpur wage deal introduces Unified ‘T-Grade’ System

Jamshedpur: Tata Motors has signed a historic new wage settlement. The agreement introduces a unified grading system and significant salary hikes, marking a major milestone for the automotive giant’s workforce.

Unified ‘T-Grade’ Levels the Playing Field

The new agreement significantly benefits approximately 3,000 employees in the Jamshedpur Operative (JO) grade. Management and the Union have merged the existing ‘E’ and ‘JO’ grades to create a single, unified ‘T-Grade’.

This structural shift ensures that all employees work under a unified system with equal facilities. Key highlights include:

  • Direct Promotions: Employees currently in JO-1 will promote directly to the T-4 grade effective April 1.
  • Equal Housing: New employees now enjoy the same quarter allotment benefits as veteran staff.
  • Basic Pay Surge: Over the next four years, the basic pay for staff will jump from ₹28,000 to ₹47,750.
  • Support for Temporary Staff: Bi-Six employees awaiting permanent status receive an immediate monthly basic pay increase of ₹5,000.

Boosts in Increments and Transfer Perks

The settlement increases the annual increment to ₹80 (up from ₹65). Consequently, the minimum increment rises from ₹255 to ₹335, while the maximum reaches ₹420 based on basic pay.

The agreement also introduces lucrative transfer and travel benefits:

  • Voluntary Transfers: Employees opting for transfers to Pune, Lucknow, or Pantnagar will receive one additional increment and a ₹1 lakh relocation allowance.
  • Travel Allowance: Staff using personal vehicles when company buses are unavailable will now receive ₹500 per day, doubling the previous ₹250 rate. (Note: The Dearness Allowance (DA) per point remains unchanged, contrary to some expectations).

Enhanced Welfare and Loan Facilities (in ₹)

The new settlement upgrades several medical and social security benefits:

  • Medical Referral: Increased from 5 lakh to 6 lakh
  • Medical Support: Increased from 2 lakh to 5 lakh
  • Retired Mediclaim: Increased from 1.5 lakh to 5 lakh
  • Funeral Assistance: Doubled from 5,000 to 10,000
  • Housing Loan: Increased from 4 lakh to 5 lakh
  • Vehicle Loan: Increased from 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh
  • Service Award (Wristwatch): Now awarded after 10 years of service instead of 15.

Four-Year Salary Growth Breakdown (in ₹)

The package outlines a clear growth trajectory over the next four years:

  • Year 1: Total increase of ₹10,862 (includes Basic, HRA, and Gratuity).
  • Year 2: Total increase of ₹2,962 (includes Fixed DA and HRA).
