Jamshedpur, 11 May: The concluding day of the three day Rabindranath Tagore birth anniversary saw the continued amalgam of Tagore’s creations through emphatic presentations in the forms of songs, music, dances and representations of main characters in his plays and dance dramas. The Rabindra Bhawan Auditorium was replete with audience and excitement that emanated from the bouquet of presentations conveying moods, feelings, emotions and observations.
Five women-oriented stories mirroring the Bard’s social concern and advocacy for women’s social freedom were presented in dramatized forms. The Principal, Tagore School of Arts, Chandana Chowdhury, added soul to the evening’s proceedings with the rendition of two of Tagore’s myriad lyrical masterpieces, ‘Ami Tomari Matir Konya’ and ‘janani Boshundhara,’ in her highly sensitive voice.

Rabindranath’s concern for the status of women arose from their 18th-19th century plight. Women were prohibited from participating in public life and their lives were spent indoors, denied the joys of the outside world beyond the four walls. Kobi Guru was born during those ‘rigorous’ and ‘captive’ times when women were consigned to household activities. As he grew up, he observed that even the women folk of his household who were all well educated had to abide by social bindings. Tagore’s fertile mind spoke up and through his essays, short stories, poems and plays took up cudgels for the rights of women to lead unshackled lives. The three day Tagore Society’s three day Rabindranath birth anniversary celebrations saluted the Nobel Laureate’s immortal creations.
