Suvendu Adhikari Named West Bengal’s Next Chief Minister

Kolkata (IANS): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday officially announced Suvendu Adhikari as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. The historic decision follows the BJP’s decisive victory in the 2026 Assembly elections, marking the first time the party will lead the state government since Independence.

Unanimous Selection

During a high-level meeting with newly elected legislators at the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Shah confirmed that Adhikari was the sole nominee for the post.

“A total of eight proposals were received, all endorsing Suvendu Adhikari,” Shah stated, noting that no other names were proposed during the session. Adhikari will visit Lok Bhavan this evening to meet Governor R.N. Ravi and formally stake his claim to form the government.

Consolidating the ‘Giant-Killer’ Legacy

Adhikari secured his leadership position following a high-profile electoral performance. He won simultaneously from his native Nandigram and the Bhabanipur constituency in South Kolkata. In Bhabanipur, Adhikari defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of over 15,000 votes. This victory mirrors his 2021 success in Nandigram, further cementing his influence within the state’s political landscape.

Oath Ceremony Details

The Governor will administer the oath of office to Adhikari and his new cabinet at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. The ceremony will take place at the Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and several Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states are expected to attend the event.
