Jamshedpur, Nov 8: Following strict directives from the Supreme Court, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Mango Municipal Corporation have begun preparations to take action on the rising issue of stray dogs in the city.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Krishna Kumar said that a comprehensive survey will soon be conducted at sensitive locations such as schools, colleges, hospitals and bus stands.

Based on the survey, stray dogs captured from these areas will undergo sterilisation.

The Supreme Court on Friday directed authorities to fence off school, college and hospital premises to prevent the entry of stray dogs.

The court also made it clear that captured dogs must be kept in shelter homes after sterilisation.

A permanent dog shelter has been constructed near Sidhgora Town Hall under JNAC.

Mango Municipal Corporation is also expediting arrangements to set up a sterilisation and dog-housing facility in Baliguma Bagan Area through an authorised agency.

The move aims at controlling the rapidly increasing population of street dogs, which has contributed to several dog-bite incidents in recent months.

Officials said the plan will soon be finalised and implemented to ensure better public safety.

Earlier, in 2010, Jusco had established a sterilisation centre for stray dogs in Birsanagar, but it was shut down following objections by former Union minister Maneka Gandhi.

The closure was ordered by the then deputy commissioner, Nitin Madan Kulkarni.

“Surveys will be conducted across schools, colleges, hospitals, railway stations and bus stands. Stray dogs will be sterilised based on the findings,” said Krishna Kumar.
