Jamshedpur: In a major relief for patients across the Kolhan region, super specialty OPD services formally commenced at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital on Monday, enabling patients to receive advanced treatment for critical illnesses free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
With the launch of the new facility, patients suffering from heart disease, kidney ailments, cancer, neurological disorders and those requiring plastic surgery will no longer need to travel to cities such as Ranchi, Kolkata or Delhi for specialized medical care.
The hospital administration has appointed eight super-specialist doctors under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, bringing advanced healthcare facilities within reach of economically weaker sections. The impact of the initiative was visible on the very first day itself, as 15 patients visited the Cardiology OPD, while several others registered for consultations in the Cancer Department.
Hospital officials said the move would significantly reduce the financial burden on poor patients who otherwise spend heavily at private hospitals. Consultation charges for specialists in private hospitals often range between ₹500 and ₹1,000, whereas the same services are now being provided entirely free at MGM Hospital.
Patients from across East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela districts, along with neighboring areas of West Bengal, are arriving at the hospital to avail themselves of the facility.
The hospital also witnessed a heavy rush in its general OPD on Monday, with a record 1,257 patients visiting various departments. The Medicine Department registered the highest footfall with 290 patients, followed by Dermatology with 170, Orthopedics with 155 and Gynecology with 141 patients.
Time Table
The hospital administration has fixed separate schedules for each super specialty department for the convenience of patients. Neuro Surgery OPD services will remain available on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 am to 1 pm. Nephrology services will function five days a week, while Cardiology OPD services will operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday during evening hours. Plastic Surgery services will be available on Saturdays only.
Newly Appointed Specialists
The newly appointed specialists include Dr. Rajiv Maharshi and Dr. Fatebahadur Singh in Neuro Surgery, Dr. Md. Aftab Ansari in Nephrology, Dr. Ashish Kumar in Onco-surgery, Dr. Gunjesh Singh in Oncology, Dr. Partho P. Choudhary and Dr. Bimalendu Kumar in Cardiology, and Dr. Manish Kumar in Plastic Surgery.
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Balram Jha said that complex surgeries for critical illnesses would begin very soon at the hospital. He added that the state-of-the-art Cath Lab at MGM Hospital has already been fully constructed and is ready for operation, which will enable heart patients to receive advanced and world-class treatment facilities locally.
