Jamshedpur, July 11: The Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has strongly opposed the recent hike in parking charges at Tatanagar Railway Station, terming it unreasonable, illogical, and unfair to the general public. In a formal letter addressed to South Eastern Railway General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra, the Chamber urged immediate intervention. Copies of the letter have also been sent to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chairman of the Railway Board Satish Kumar, and Divisional Railway Manager of Chakradharpur Division.
SCCI President Vijay Anand Moonka stated that the recent surge in vehicle parking fees at Tatanagar Station is excessive and is being collected arbitrarily by parking staff. “According to the official receipt, the charge for six-hour parking is ₹48, which is already quite high. Yet, violations are rampant, with users being asked to pay up to ₹500,” he alleged.
Moonka further said that even for parking durations as short as 30 minutes, commuters have been forced to pay ₹100 before their vehicles were released. Chamber members themselves have reportedly faced such overcharging.
He criticized the mismanagement and irregularities at the station’s parking lot, adding that these issues are causing unnecessary inconvenience to citizens. “It seems as though the railway’s goal is no longer public service but profit through parking fees,” Moonka remarked.
Honorary General Secretary Manav Kedia confirmed that the Chamber has taken this issue seriously and expects the Railways to act swiftly. “This unjust practice is tarnishing the image of Indian Railways and breeding public resentment,” he said. The Chamber has called for immediate corrective measures to restore public trust and ensure a positive perception of railway services.
