Successful surgical excision of potato-sized brain tumor at BNMH Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, Oct 31: Most of the meningioma is curable, but bigger tumours may lead to risks as they continue to put pressure on the brain which may even lead to emergency. Recently Namita Rajak resident of Galudih, East Singhbhum treated with large potato sized brain tumour at Brahmananda Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Jamshedpur (BNMH).

Few days back 45-year-old Namita Rajak was admitted at BNMH with complaint of altered behaviour, irritability with psychotic features and sometimes headache since last one year. Previously also she underwent treatment for the same by multiple local doctors including psychiatrist but was not relieved of her symptoms.

When she was admitted at BNMH, Tamolia in neurosurgery OPD, she was advised MRI of the brain by Dr. Rajiv Maharshi, (Consultant – Neurosurgery). The MRI showed a large potato sized tumour in her right side of the brain, which was most likely meningioma. Basically Meningioma is a highly vascular tumour of brain, commonly seen in middle aged females. After all the required checkups done she was planned for surgery. She was operated by experienced Dr. Rajiv Maharshi, (Cosultant – Neurosurgery). Conventional craniotomy was done & tumour was excised under the challenges of torrential bleeding. The surgery took four hours and tumour was completely excised in whole. Post-operation Mrs. Namita Rajak recovered well and her behavioral changes have returned to near normal and she was discharged from hospital in stable condition.

Speaking about the entire process Rajiv Maharshi, (Cosultant – Neurosurgery) Brahmananda Narayana Multispecialty Hospital, Jamshedpur (BNMH) said that, �The size of meningioma varies from peanut to large sized potato. Meningioma is a completely curable tumor. Early diagnosis & treatment is the corner stone for such tumours. I am thankful to my team and staff for the cooperation in this successful procedure.�

Causes of meningioma are multifactorial, one of which is post radiotherapy. The common symptoms of this tumour are seizure, headache & vomiting, weakness of the body part, behavioral changes etc. Talking about brain tumours, early diagnosis is the key, never ignore such symptoms and consult a doctor in order to reduce upcoming risks.
