Jamshedpur, August 25: A 4.5×3.5 cm stone was successfully removed from the right kidney of a 64 year old patient, Abani Kanta Mahata by surgeon Dr Champai Soren at Brahmanand Narayana Multi Specialty Hospital.

The patient hailing from Bandwan, in Purulia district of West Bengal, was asked to

undergo ultrasound – KUB, Routine urine check, urine culture and other investigations. The investigations revealed that Mahata had a stone in his right kidney. The patient had come for a routine checkup at the hospital and the tests revealation were puzzling. Prior to the diagnosis Abani Kanta Mahata had no symptoms of pain and neither was he a diabetic.

Dr. Champai Soren, said, The patient had attended one of our health camps and routine checks were conducted. He was later referred to the hospital for a thorough checkup. On diagnosis, we discovered a large stone in his right kidney. In medical terminology such stones are called Stag Horn. Considering the health problems it could cause we decided on performing immediate surgery which entails opening up the kidney to remove the stone.

Dr. Champai Soren, further said, Such large kidney stone surgery is very rare in this region.

The operation was a success story for us and the patient was later discharged soon post his

complete recovery.

Dr Soren explained that in kidney stone cases, it was advisable to undergo at least

Ultrasound scan test (USG) even in cases of mild abdominal pain to detect even the remotest possibility of small growth of kidney stone. These can be treated, he said, with medication or with minimum invasive technology like Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy by which process the surgeon removes the kidney stone(s) through a small incision in the skin or through Retrograde Intra-Renal Surgery (RIRS), a procedure for doing surgery within the kidney using a

viewing tube called a Fiberop c Endoscope.
