Students of NIT hog limelight at SAE Aero Design Contest in USA

Jamshedpur: The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur hogged limelight at the SAE Aero Design East 2015 held in Florida, USA.

Team Phoenix participated in the SAE Aero Design Contest (East) in Florida between March 13 and 15.

The international competition witnessed a participation of 75 teams from across the globe among which Team Phoenix could manage to secure the 13th position internationally in the micro category.

The team made one flying model named ‘The Red Eagle’ for micro category. The 1.5 kg aircraft managed to lift 3kg in this given category which made them stand 13th.

The students Harsh Vardhan and Ankita Singh Chauhan, third year Metallurgy students and Abhijeet Kumar and Sumit Pandey, third year civil engineering students flew to the USA for the competition. SAE Aero Design Contest is organised in association with NASA and Lockheed Martin, the primary aircraft manufacturer of the US Army.

The team made one flying model named ‘The Red Eagle’ for micro category. The 1.5 kg aircraft managed to lift 3kg in this given category which made them stand 13th. The model in this category was made out of balsa wood and was flown with a help of 1600mah batteries at a speed of about 32 ft/sec.

Most importantly, the plane had to be assembled within a time limit of two minutes failing which would cost the team precious points. The main sponsors for the participation have been Bank of India and Bank of India. The team was also supported by alumni members.

Notably, NIT (erstwhile Regional Institute of Technology) is one of the eight regional engineering institutes established in the country in the year 1960. The Institute was fully taken over by the Central Government on 1st April, 2003 and renamed National Institute of Technology.
