St. Mary�s English High School students motivated for a science career

Jamshedpur : A group of 71 students from St. Mary�s English High School,Bistupur accompanied by two teachers, Nibha Sinha and Shambhulal Kumar visited CSIR-NML, Jahedpur and interacted with the scientists and Research Fellows this morning under the aegis of School- NML interactive programme (SNIP) sponsored by the National Academy of Science (NASI) Jharkhand Chapter.

The students were thrilled to visit the laboratory and interact with the working scientists.

The programme was scheduled for three and half hours, which comprised of an overview of Indian Science and Technology, Documentary film show on CSIR and NML activities, visit to NML Museum / Archive and selective units of the laboratory to have an exposure of modern laboratory research environment. Dr. N.G.Goswami, Chief Scientist and coordinator briefed about the programme and presented a birds eye view on Indian Science & Technology and also on major contributons by different laboratories of CSIR,DRDO,ICAR and ICMR .

Dr Goswami motivated the participating teachers and students for looking at the different facets of science and make the subject more facinating. He added,we can solve our socio-economic & developmental issues only by judicious applications of S&T.Later the visiting teachers and students were taken around different Units of the Laboratory by Dr P N Mishra, Sr Scientist.

Several CSIR-NML Senior Scientists including Dr K K Sahu,Dr R K Sahu, Dr M K Jha, Dr A K Mahanty,Dr Prabir Roy and many others took part in the programme despite of their busy schedule and explained about different experimental set-ups in their laboratories.

The students expressed their feelings, asked number of questions, and got clarified doubts from the scientists
Kr. Vaibhav, a student of std. X after comletion of the the lab visit,said � I came to know about many new aspects of science and technology which I barely knew earlier”.

Yashika another student said, “I came to know about new things here like India�s first Super computer PARAM designed by CSIR in 1986, Swaraj Tractor used in farming based on CSIR technology, the importance of patent and its impact. It was a wonderful experience rejuvenating my thought process.

Jyotsna Agrawal, a student of Std. X said, “The visit to the laboratory helped me to know in depth about different ores, minerals metals, rocks, and how they are extracted and used. The explanation given by the concern Scientist was simply awesome”.

The students were delighted to know about the NML’s eco-friendly Technologies that ai to improve the quality of environment around the Taj Trapezium and prevent degradation of world Heritage place.

Another Std. X student, Jasmeet Kaur said, “We are thrilled to know about CSIR-CCMB lab’s contribution in the introduction of DNA Finger printing in India and the preparation of molecular database for Basmati rice”.

The visiting teachers requested to allow more students to this programme as they do not find the opportunity at a short intervals and they feel the SNIP programme is helping the young minds to shape their career.
