Jamshedpur: With the sudden rise in temperature, cases of skin infections, cold and cough have surged across the city. Increased heat and excessive sweating have led to a spike in fungal infections, heat rashes, ringworm and itching. Hospitals and private clinics are witnessing an influx of patients suffering from various skin ailments. At MGM Hospital, the dermatology OPD has seen a significant rise in footfall, with an average of 125 patients daily compared to the usual 20-30. Many patients are presenting symptoms such as rashes on the neck, back and face, athlete’s foot, nail infections and black spots on the cheeks. Chronic psoriasis patients are also experiencing worsening conditions due to the changing weather.

According to Dr. R Kumar, a dermatologist, the early onset of summer has led to an increase in cases of sunburn, tanning and other skin conditions. Normally, such cases peak in May and June, but this year, the numbers have doubled in February itself. Medical experts warn that rising temperatures and high humidity create an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive, especially in sweat-prone areas like the feet, back and underarms.

To prevent skin infections and related issues, doctors advise people to take proper precautions. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water helps prevent dehydration and skin dryness. Using a mild face wash and avoiding tight, thick clothing can reduce the risk of skin irritation. Those suffering from heat rashes should apply anti-fungal powders or creams and people are advised to avoid wearing damp or wet clothes for long periods. Increasing the intake of seasonal fruits can boost immunity, while wearing open and airy footwear helps prevent fungal infections. Applying powder to absorb excess sweat and covering the skin properly while stepping out in the sun can also offer protection.

“The rising temperatures and fluctuating weather are increasing the risk of skin allergies and infections. People need to take precautions early to prevent complications,” said Dr. R Kumar. With summer setting in earlier than usual, dermatologists urge residents to adopt proper skin care measures and remain alert to any symptoms to avoid long-term complications.
