Speeding, lack of signboards on Sonari-Dobo Road in Jamshedpur leading to fatal accidents

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur: The Sonari-Dobo road, a vital route connecting to National Highway 33, has become notorious for frequent accidents, primarily due to sharp turns, high speed, and the absence of proper signage. This eight-kilometre stretch is a critical link for those traveling between Jamshedpur and Ranchi, yet it remains a danger zone due to deteriorating road conditions and poorly maintained infrastructure.

Every year, an average of 30 to 35 accidents occur on this road, resulting in 8 to 10 fatalities. One of the key accident hotspots is the sharp turn before Kanderbeda Chowk, where vehicles often lose control due to excessive speed. The absence of crucial signboards and warnings further exacerbates the situation, as drivers continue to speed without the necessary caution.

In the past, signboards were placed along the route to warn drivers of the sharp turns, but they have since disappeared. In addition to signboards, there is a call for the installation of radium strips for better visibility, especially at night. Many local residents, including Rakesh Sharma and Sanjay Gupta, have suggested measures such as limiting vehicle speeds, especially near the sharp bends, and improving traffic management at key intersections like GG Raghunath Murmu Chowk, where vehicles coming from multiple directions pose a risk for accidents.

The road’s deteriorating condition further contributes to the problem. Numerous potholes have developed along the route, which forces drivers to manoeuvre in ways that compromise their control over the vehicle. Often, vehicles coming from opposite directions try to pass each other on the same side, increasing the likelihood of collisions.

Local residents and commuters are urging authorities to take action. “The road width has become inadequate for the heavy traffic load,” says Suresh Chaudhary, a local resident. He suggests that constructing a four-lane road could significantly reduce accidents. Additionally, there is a pressing need for the police and administration to increase awareness campaigns, educate drivers about road safety, and ensure that caution boards are installed at critical points along the road.
