Offset printing press installed
Jamshedpur : The inmates of Ghaghidih Central Jail can now look forward to hone their skills. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh of Jharkhand High Court on Sunday inaugurated a special study centre of Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) in the Ghaghidih Central Jail.
Apart from the IGNOU’s special study centre, justice Singh also inaugurated an offset printing press and soap manufacturing unit on the central jail. The new facilities will make the jail a manufacturing hub under the skill development programme for the prisoners lodged.
Addressing a function organised inside the central prison, the justice Singh said ” It is a new beginning for the inmates. I think the new facilities will add value to their life. When I was at Ghaghidih Central Jail on August 26 last, I had launched several handicraft projects under skill development programme. I am pleased to say that the progress in this prison is greater than what I had hoped for.”
Superintendent, Ghaghidih Central Jail Satyendra Kumar Chaudhury said that during his visit to the jail justice saw the offset printing press which has been provided to the prison a month ago.
“Justice Singh interacted with a dozen trained prisoners who will be operating the offset printing press and assured us that he would ensure that all the print material used in the civil courts across Kolhan may be printed at the Ghaghidih Central Jail,” said Chaudhury.
Beside inspecting the offset printing press, the justice also saw the soap manufacturing machine which has reached at the central prison on Thursday and talked to the trained prisoners who will be working at the machine.
Chaudhury said after the offset printing press was provided by the home department a month ago, they had sent a staff of the central prison to Hazaribag Central Jail for getting training.
Notably, the Ghaghidih Central Jail is spread over an area of 20 acres — set up on as large an area as Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi. Spread over 20 acres of land, the Ghaghidih Central Jail has a prisoners’ capacity of 1,447. There are a total of 11 trained jail guards, including three female ones. In addition, there are 65 hired security guards, including ex-servicemen and Home Guard personnel.
