Jamshedpur: South Eastern Railway ( SER) has saved Rs 4.74 crore on fuel cost by introducing Head on Generation (HoG) system in operating trains.
In the HOG system power supply is drawn from Over Head Equipment (OHE) through converters provided in electric locomotives (WAP-7/WAP-5) for coach AC, lighting, fans etc. This system is being provided in long distance trains having DG sets provided at both the ends.
The system is considered to provide a cost effective, reliable and energy efficient supply system for coaches. This eliminates use of diesel alternator set in power cars which creates noise and air pollution. This system also helps in reducing carbon emission.
Chief public relations officer of SER, Sanjay Ghosh said that they have achieved a huge saving in diesel fuel consumption of power cars with introduction of HOG system in Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches.
” About 22 trains of South Eastern Railway have been converted to HOG system resulting in approx savings to the tune of Rs 4.74 crores for the period from April to September 2019. By conversion of such trains, SER has saved 7,28,491 litres of diesel oil till September, 2019, which is a big achievement,” he said.
Another official went on to inform that Head on Generation system is electrical power supply system where electrical power for catering total load of train, which includes Train Lighting, Air conditioning, Lighting, fannage and other passenger interface requirement working on electrical power supply. This scheme is widely used power supply system by railways world over. The power in this system is received from locomotive. With introduction of this scheme heavy underslung power generating equipment gets eliminated. Further it also reduces use of diesel sets employed in power cars in End on Generation system.
The power generator cars which used to make huge noise and emit fumes is no more be there. In place of two such generator cars there is one standby silent generator car to be used for emergency,” the official said.
Notably Chakradharpur under SER is the highest revenue earning railway division in terms of freight in the country. About 150 passenger trains pass through various stations of Chakradharpur railway division every day.
