Snake rescue efforts and safety measures highlighted on World Snake Day in Jamshedpur

Seraikela: Seraikela-Kharsawan district, known for its abundance of poisonous snakes, witnesses a significant rescue effort each month. Approximately 90 to 100 snakes are rescued from homes and surroundings, highlighting the ongoing presence and danger posed by these reptiles. Raja Barik, a dedicated snake catcher from Seraikela, has played a pivotal role in this effort, rescuing around 14,000 snakes to date and releasing them safely into forested areas.

World Snake Day, observed annually on July 16th, holds special significance globally. Originating in 1970, the day aims to raise awareness about snakes and their conservation. In Seraikela-Kharsawan, where snake bites lead 20-25 individuals monthly to seek treatment at Sadar Hospital during the rainy season, awareness and preparedness are crucial. The hospital maintains a stock of 380 to 400 anti-snake venom injections to manage these emergencies effectively.

Raja Barik’s journey into snake conservation began at a young age after a transformative experience with a snake in his home. His decision not to harm any animals led him to pursue training in snake catching at Morhabadi ground, Ranchi, in 2010. Since then, he has operated voluntarily until securing a position with the Forest Department in 2023. His efforts have focused on rescuing various species, including pythons, cobras, and kraits, providing them a chance to thrive in their natural habitats.

In response to increasing snakebite cases, residents are advised to take immediate action in case of an incident. It’s crucial to remove any constrictive items from the affected area, apply a tight bandage approximately two inches above the bite within 20 minutes, and keep the victim calm to slow down the spread of venom. Positioning the bitten limb appropriately can also help delay the venom’s movement towards vital organs, potentially improving outcomes for victims of snake bites in the region.
