Ranchi : Set in the sprawling 60+acre plot, Shanti Bhavan Medical Center (SBMC) at the outskirts of Simdega, is bound to be a boon for not only the people of Jharkhand but also the neighboring States Chhattisgarh and Odisha. SBMC, the new multi specialty hospital at Biru in Simdega district of Jharkhand, is equipped with all modern amneties including Cath-lab for heart surgery, Dialysis machines, Modern Patho-lab, Blood bank, ICU, Ambulance and 200 bed facilities.
The renowned Heart Surgeon and Head of Heart Department at Y.N Patil Medical College, Mumbai, Dr. James Thomas with more than 16000 Heart Surgeries to his credit, was specially present at SBMC for performing six open heart surgeries on 15th and 16th instant.
Meeting him at the hospital after the first surgery on 15th, the writer had the opportunity to talk with the renowned surgeon. Dr. Thomas was all praise for the new hospital and termed it as among the top multi specialty centers in Eastern India. He informed that till date he had performed all the 16 open heart surgeries including couple of surgeries on young children ailing from severe heart problems.
Talking about the just performed on 20 year old Poonam Ekka, he said that one of her vaves was bleeding internally causing the heart to become abnormally large. The only way to restore it to normal size was replacing it by a replacement valve specially imported from America.
The two hour open heart surgery was successful and the girl’s heart returning to normalcy. He even took me to the CCU where she was shifted from the ultra modern OT. He said that the replaced valve would function absolutely normal for more than 50 years. If the operation was not done, the chances of the girl surviving would have been a maximum three years. Now she was free to carry on with all her activities and lead a healthy life.
He explained at length on all the aspects of open heart surgery and said that the by-pass surgery was the toughest among all. He was all praise for the State government for financially assisting the poor patients for all the surgeries, which normally are so high that the poor patients could ill afford. The valve replacement surgery would cost Rs.1.30 Lakhs. All the surgeries performed till date were courtesy the State Government’s ‘Mukhya Mantri Gambhir Bimari Yojna’.
The renowned surgeon affirmed that he would visit the hospital every month for performing open heart surgeries. More than 50 patients were already registered and ready to be operated at the earliest. The other 5 patients lined up for the open heart surgery in this trip include 5 year old Kanti Kumari,Karuna Devi(45),Arpit(65) and 60 year old Bhaleriya Xaxa for by-pass.
Chief Administrator of SBMC, Arwin Sushil said that the hospital started functioning from 2014 and since then many specialist Doctors and Surgeons from Vellore and Mumbai offer their services from time to time.
