Thrissur: An explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Mundathikkodu killed at least six people and injured several others on Tuesday. The incident occurred during preparations for the Thrissur Pooram festival.
The blast took place at a facility preparing firecracker samples for the Thiruvambadi Devaswom, the temple is one of the festival’s major participants. Approximately 40 workers were on-site at the time of the explosion, though officials confirmed that at least seven individuals managed to escape the premises.
The force of the explosion was felt several kilometers away. Staff at the state-run Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) reported feeling tremors similar to an earthquake. Local authorities placed Thrissur Medical College and surrounding hospitals on high alert to treat the injured, eight of whom remain in critical condition.
Firefighters and emergency teams encountered difficulties during rescue operations due to thick smoke and the presence of unexploded materials. The site remains cordoned off while personnel work to secure the area.
Preliminary reports suggest a large quantity of stored explosives ignited, though the exact cause remains under investigation. The incident occurred just one day after the ceremonial flag hoisting for the Thrissur Pooram, a festival known for its large-scale pyrotechnic displays. District officials are now expected to review safety protocols regarding the storage and handling of fireworks materials.
