Six arrested in Kolkata over nationwide Wi-Fi fraud

Kolkata Police busted a fake call centre operating from the Dalhousie area on Wednesday. Detectives arrested six individuals, including five women, during the raid.

The fraudsters allegedly duped people across the country of crores of rupees. They promised lifetime internet access under a fictitious Pradhan Mantri Wi-Fi Yojana.

The scam operators claimed the government launched a new wireless connectivity scheme. They asked prospective victims to pay a small first instalment.

The telecallers promised nationwide lifelong Wi-Fi usage after this initial payment. This attractive offer persuaded numerous unsuspecting citizens to part with their money.

The callers posed as government representatives during telephonic communications. They strictly followed a prepared written script to convince potential victims.

Police acted on a tip-off from a confidential source. They raided the facility located at Government Place (East) in central Kolkata.

Officers arrested the call centre manager, Krishnendu Saha, at the scene. They also took five female telecallers into custody during the operation.

Investigators seized multiple laptops, mobile phones, and extensive customer databases. They also recovered the written script used for misleading callers.

Preliminary findings indicate that victims belong to various regions nationwide. A large concentration of affected citizens resides within Kolkata itself.

The police have launched a detailed investigation into the operation. They aim to trace financial trails and identify additional syndicate members.

Detectives are currently interrogating the six suspects in custody. They are also examining the confiscated electronic devices and records.
