Jamshedpur: A retired professor and her brother were found hanging from the same ceiling fan at their residence in the Sitaramdera police station area, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred in New Layout on DLC Office Road. The duo committed suicide at least two to three days ago. The bodies were later sent to MGM Medical College for post-mortem.
The deceased were identified as Dr. Saraswati Sarkar, a retired Zoology professor who had also worked as a guest faculty member at a cooperative college, and her brother Balram, an electrician. Both were unmarried and lived together.
Foul Smell Led to Discovery
Students and faculty members had been trying to contact Dr. Sarkar since Friday but failed to reach her. Concerned former students visited the house and found it locked from the inside. A foul smell coming from the residence raised suspicion, and then the police were informed.
No Suicide Note Found
Police broke open the door in the presence of a magistrate and recovered the bodies. Officers said no suicide note was found at the scene.
Preliminary information suggests Dr. Sarkar had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, while her brother was reportedly suffering from a kidney-related illness.
Sitaramdera police station in-charge Niranjan Kumar said illness and mental distress appear to be the likely reasons. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
