Jamshedpur : Jamshedpur East MLA and former Jharkhand government minister Saryu Roy has once again raised the issue of illegal mining of iron ore. Saryu has written a letter to Chief Minister Hemant Soren, stating that the Government of India constituted the Shah Commission on 22 November 2010 to investigate complaints of illegal mining in other iron ore bearing states of the country including Jharkhand.
The Commission submitted its report to the Government of India in October 2013. The Shah Commission did not get the full time to investigate in Jharkhand, yet the Commission uncovered various types of irregularities committed by the iron ore miners in Jharkhand and imposed a fine of around Rs 14,541 crore on the defaulting miners.
The Commission has expressed doubt in its report that if the mining leases are approved and the pace of mining continues the same, then the iron ore reserves of Jharkhand will be depleted in the next 43 years. Saryu urged the Chief Minister to constitute a SIT and get the entire case investigated so that the culprits are punished.
