Sir Dorabji Tata: The man who made India’s Olympic dream a reality

June 23 in International Olympics Day

Jamshedpur, June 22: Born on August 27, 1859, Sir Dorabji Tata the elder son of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, started the Indian Olympic movement 100 years ago. As we celebrate International Olympic Day on June 23, we remember the founding president of Indian Olympic Association and Tata Scion Group’s Sir Dorabji Tata whose tireless efforts made it possible for an Indian contingent to participate in their first ever Olympics.

Sir Dorabji Tata was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed playing tennis, was an accomplished rider and played cricket and football during his college days at Cambridge.

Sir Dorabji Tata steered India to enter the world of international sport by selecting and sponsoring four athletes and two wrestlers for the Olympic Games of Antwerp in 1920 (even before India had an Olympic body). He also secured a place for India in the 1924 Olympiad in Paris and was chosen as a member of the International Olympic Committee.

In 1923-24, a provisional All India Olympic Committee was set-up, which organised the All India Olympic Games (that later became the National Games of India) in February 1924. Eight athletes from these Games were selected to represent India at the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics, accompanied by manager Harry Crowe Buck. This gave impetus to the development and institutionalization of sports in India, and, in 1927, Indian Olympics Association (IOA) was formed with Sir Dorabji Tata as its President.

The IOA selected India’s team to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, and India won Gold medal for the first time in hockey.

Sir Dorabji transformed his father’s dream into reality by setting up India’s first integrated steel plant (Tata Iron and Steel Company in 1907, now Tata Steel Limited), a power plant (Tata Hydroelectric Power Supply Company in 1910, now Tata Power) and a research institute (Indian Institute of Science in 1911).

The International Olympic Day is celebrated annually on the 23rd of June in the entire world. It is a global event to promote games and sports for the current generation.   The International Olympic Day is one of the important global celebrations of the year in which the entire world participates actively.
