Ranchi: The newly reconstituted Sikh Riots Commission will conduct district-wise meetings across Jharkhand to expedite compensation and justice for the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Affected families from several districts participated in a meeting at the old Jharkhand High Court building in Ranchi to discuss the decision, with a focus on accelerating compensation procedures and resolving long-pending cases. Following the demise of former Commission Chairman D.P. Singh, the Jharkhand High Court recently appointed retired Justice Gautam Choudhary to head the one-member commission.
Satnam Singh Gambhir, the Eastern India President of the All India Sikh Students Federation and a petitioner in the case, attended the meeting on a special invitation alongside Advisor Amarjit Singh Bhamra. Victim families travelled from various districts, including Bokaro, Ranchi, Daltonganj, Seraikela, Ramgarh, and Dhanbad, to raise concerns regarding prolonged administrative delays and pending verification processes.
To streamline the relief process, the Commission decided to officially demand reports from the concerned district authorities regarding victims who have not yet received their due compensation.
During the session, Gambhir requested the Commission to hold localized hearings so that affected families from remote areas could present their grievances directly without traveling long distances. The Commission accepted the proposal and plans to roll out the district-wise hearing schedule across Jharkhand in the coming months to resolve all pending claims without further delay.
