Short film challenge among school students to raise awareness on eye donation

Jamshedpur, September 2: An Awareness Session on Eye Donation & Cornea Transplantation Procedure was organized by Roshni Jamshedpur at Eye Hospital in Sakchi on Tuesday.

On the occasion President of Roshni Taru Lata Gandhi said, “In order to make the city residents aware of eye donation our organization has decide to observe Awareness week. It’s been 22 years since Roshni was established but the sad thing is that till now we have received only 113 eye donation which is sorry figure when we look at the population of city, said Gandhi adding that on an average 3 to 4 people donate their eyes in a year”.

Addressing the gathering, President Gandhi further said that it’s the responsibility of the family to inform the doctors after the death of person who has pledged to donate eyes. Within six hours after the death of a person eyes can be beneficial to others.

Parminder Singh, Vice President of Roshni said, “The session with media was to get their further support by making them aware about the procedure of Eye Donation and Eye Banking. Media has been an active partner in the good cause and without Media support Eye Donation would not have gone so far”, he added.

Ashu Tiwary, Assistant Secretary of Roshni and Principal of Motilal Nehru Public School said, “We are planning to approach around 30 schools of Jamshedpur were students can participate in short film making competition on corneal donations with focus on eye donation which will be used by Roshni for spreading the word, said Tiwary adding that various other events will also be organized and the prize distribution will be held on October 2.

At the event team Roshni informed the media about other forthcoming mega events going to be organized by Roshni Jamshedpur in coming months. 

Director General of Police, Jharkhand too have come in support of Roshni by issuing circular across the state to inform any medico legal case to Roshni team so that victim’s family could be approached by Roshni team for eye donation after proper counseling.

At the event Parminder Singh, Vice President made the presentation. Mrs Aruna Taneja, Vice President extended the vote of thanks. Patron of Wing Cmdr P N Swamy, Assistant Secretaries Ashu Tiwary and Parvinder Singh Kapoor, Treasurer Sudha Swamy, members M M Rao and Sita Joshi from Roshni were present.

Since its establishment in 1994 Roshni has received eye donation from 113 persons benefiting 166 corneally blind persons who are now able to see the beautiful world.

Team Roshni Jamshedpur are always engaged in spreading awareness in society for cornea donation and its transplantation and in helping cornealy blind people of Jamshedpur to get ‘Roshni’ in their lives, by arranging eye donation and cornea transplantation under expert medical care.
